TerraColor® Global Imagery - Ocean Masking

To remove clouds, ice and edges of Landsat scenes from ocean areas, we first developed a global land/ocean mask at 15-meter resolution that separates ocean areas from land areas. Using the mask, we processed the entire global dataset and filled in ocean areas with a generic ocean color or bathymetric shaded relief image. This creates a clean global image without distracting clouds and image edges, makes it easy to see small islands and track ships or aircraft, and simple to use off-the-shelf for web, print and media applications. The boundary between land and ocean has a feather zone to soften and blend the transition. We attempted to retain shallow water, rivermouths, and bathymetric features where possible to create a natural look and preserve this valuable information. Most large inland bodies of water are not masked.

Using our proprietary ocean mask, we have created three standard versions of TerraColor: one with a uniform blue ocean fill and two more with bathymetric shaded relief images. For an additional fee, we can also create custom versions of TerraColor Global that fill any background color (i.e., a specific shade of blue) or image (such as your own bathymetric shaded relief) into the ocean areas.
